Society for Science's ISEF Regeneron

PrePAIR Mentors

On May 18th, 2023 PrePAIR Mentors had a great time hosting an Educational Booth at Regeneron ISEF's Education Outreach Day at the Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center in Dallas, Texas!

Over 1,600 students from around the world and 250 of their teachers and adult chaperones visited Regeneron ISEF on this day and came through the STEM Innovation Expo. A big thank you to the Society and to Caitlin Sullivan, Society of Sciences' Director of Outreach and Equity—we look forward to being back at ISEF next year!

As part of the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), a program of Society for Science, Education Outreach Day gives thousands of students and their teachers a chance to participate in a full-day of hands-on, experiential STEM programming, including meeting and learning from some of the 1,700 high school STEM research finalists.

Our Case Study

PrePAIR Mentors simulated intoxication on secondary-school students and its effect on both the eye and the brain.

Students were asked to stand about 10 feet (on the line) away from the bucket. Students then threw 6 basketballs and into a bucket 10 feet away (the percent of basketballs in the bucket was the percent recorded). Students then were asked to put on "Intoxicated Goggles" which simulated intoxication. Students then once again threw 6 basketballs in the bucket with the goggles on and their response was recorded (a percent difference was then determined from there).

Results per participant varied—some performed better or worse with the "Intoxicated Goggles" while others performed the same with and without the goggles. It was hypothesized that some participants may have done better with the goggles on as their brain was already used to the motion, length, and speed the ball was needed to throw into the bucket.

We had over 200 participants perform this experiment and recorded the first 40 participants. Thank you to everyone who participated!
